About Bowman’s Market
The Golden Rule grocery store, later Bowman’s Market, opened its doors in 1913 in the tiny community of Kaysville (pop. approximately 1,100.) Its proprietor was J.J. (June) Bowman, a young man of 22. His philosophy, as proclaimed by the name of his store, was to treat his customers as he would like to be treated. Over 100 years later those principles still run deep and guide how we operate and support our community.
1913: Bowman’s Market Opens in Kaysville
Bowman’s Market, initially named “The Golden Rule” store, opened its doors in 1913. Junior Joseph (June) Bowman founded the business in Kaysville, UT, which at the time had a population of ~1,000. June’s philosophy, as proclaimed by the name, was to treat his customers as he would want to be treated.
1957: Relocated to 75 East 200 North
June passed away in 1951 and his son, Richard (Dick) Bowman, partnered with his mother, Mary Bowman, to own and operate the store. In 1957, Dick bought a new store at 75 East 200 North which was subsequently expanded 6 times to support growth in Kaysville.
1985: July 24th Bowmans/Kaysville Recreation Breakfast
In 1985, Dick began the July 24th Bowmans/Kaysville Recreation Breakfast, which has become an annual tradition. Bowman’s donates the food and all proceeds go toward Kaysville’s Parks & Recreation Youth Scholarship Program to pay athletic recreation registration fees for youth in families facing financial constraints.
1991: Bowman’s Stopped Selling Tobacco and Alcohol
In 1991, Dick decided to stop selling tobacco and alcohol at Bowman’s. Dick wanted to emphasize the importance of health and wellbeing to his family, and particularly to the youth within the community.
